Largo Course Overview
The Largo course is designed to help students develop strong writing skills by focusing on outlining, note-taking, and sentence structure. Through structured lessons, students will engage with a variety of nonfiction and fiction source texts, allowing them to practice key writing techniques while expanding their vocabulary and grammar proficiency. Weekly exercises will reinforce these skills, ensuring students gain confidence in their ability to construct well-organized and stylistically strong sentences.
By consistently practicing outlining and note-taking, students will enhance their comprehension and critical thinking skills, which are essential for effective writing. Each lesson builds upon previous concepts, guiding students through progressively more complex writing tasks while reinforcing the foundational principles of structure and style.
A Structured, Progressive Curriculum
The Largo course consists of eight modules, each carefully designed to help students strengthen their writing skills step by step. As they progress through the course, they will refine their outlining techniques, practice summarization, and learn to structure their writing more effectively. Each module consists of four lessons, allowing students to absorb new concepts at a steady and manageable pace.
Module 1: Outline of Focused Facts
Students will begin by learning how to extract key details from a source text and structure them into an Outline of Focused Facts (OFF). This method helps them organize their thoughts before writing.
Module 2: OFF Rewrites
Building on the first module, students will practice rewriting their outlines into clear and coherent sentences, reinforcing their understanding of sentence structure and fluency.
Module 3: Story Outline
Students will shift from nonfiction to storytelling by learning how to outline narrative structures. This module introduces them to the essential components of storytelling, helping them organize their ideas for creative writing.
Module 4: Summarizing a Source Text
This module teaches students how to identify the main points of a text and condense the information into a well-structured summary, improving comprehension and writing clarity.
Module 5: Writing from Pictures
Encouraging creativity, this module challenges students to create structured narratives based on visual prompts, helping them develop descriptive and analytical writing skills.
Module 6: Summarizing Multiple Source Texts
Expanding on their summarization skills, students will learn how to synthesize information from multiple sources, an essential skill for research-based writing.
Module 7: Introduction to Informal Essays
Students will begin applying their outlining and summarization techniques to essay writing, learning how to structure an informal essay effectively.
Module 8: Finalizing an Informal Essay
In the final module, students will refine their informal essays, focusing on clarity, organization, and style to produce a polished piece of writing.
